Dental Implant recovery. What can I expect?
What happens after a single or a full mouth dental implants surgery? How does your body react after the placement? Is it a safe surgery? What could happen during the recovery period?
First, we must remember how the implant recovery process works.
A dental implant is a titanium screw (or post) that is placed or inserted into your bone through minimal surgery. Right after the surgery is when the recovery process begins.
After the placement, you might start feeling some discomfort. This is absolutely normal and will be addressed with painkillers.
After all, we are invading or drilling the bone. The body has several self-defense mechanisms and it will react differently from patient to patient. It depends on general health conditions such as age, bone size, previous diseases, etc.
After the All On 4 surgery, you can expect some sort of swelling and mild discomfort. You can maybe feel it for the next 3 days after the surgery. Placing a titanium screw is technically an invasive procedure for your body. Your body needs to interact with the inserted object. The bone will bond to the implant. This is the osseointegration process.
It takes from four to six months for the body to integrate with the titanium screw. Once the implants are fused to the bone they provide a strong foundation to act as the root of a tooth. Later you can load those implants with a fixed hybrid bridge or with Snap-In Dentures. This is the way you rehabilitate full mouth dental implants.
For the All-On-4, the dental implants recovery lapse is the same as a single-tooth implant. We need to wait four to six months after the placement to load on top of any type of restoration.
Will I feel pain during the dental implants recovery?
Right after the surgery, you will receive prescriptions such as anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Taking your medications will avoid infections and control the pain.
If you find yourself in the need for harder painkillers such as Codeine, please be sure to bring those from home. In Mexico, any variety of Codeine is restricted. We use strong painkillers such as Ketorolaco. Any variety of Codeine is not able to be prescribed at the dentist in Mexico.
Dental implants problems during recovery
If you are unable to have proper hygiene, bacteria can form in the gum line and between the gums and the implants. This could compromise the complete health of that particular area. It can include swelling and infection that can cause you further problems in the future.
NOTE: Poor hygiene could seriously affect your dental implant recovery time lapse. Your habits must change, remember please what brought you here in the first place. Maybe, the lack of hygiene was responsible for your decay. If you do not clean the implant area you could lose those implants in the future.
After the dental implant is set into the bone, a strict oral hygiene ritual needs to be followed at least twice a day.
You will need to brush, use mouthwash and water floss (such as a Waterpik) to remove food particles from the gums and between the bridge. If you do not follow the proper hygiene habits you could develop an infection, also known as an abscess.
A sign to raise a red flag for dental implants problems could be a huge pain, huge discomfort and a reddish area around the implant. If that is your case, the implant needs to be removed. Statistics show that there is a 5% average of rejection on average after a dental implants recovery.
Dental implants problems can arise right after the surgery or years after the surgery. It depends directly on the hygiene habits you keep.
If placed correctly, dental implants in Mexico or anywhere in the world should last a lifetime inside your body. It depends a lot on your general health conditions and new hygiene habits how long those implants could last.
The Healing Varies on each patient
After the surgical placement, the dental implant recovery takes its own healing process. It will be ready to load after waiting four to six months for the osseointegration process to take place.
This means we will wait for the bone to fuse with the titanium implant. After the osseointegration process happens, then the body is ready to load it with a porcelain crown or a fixed hybrid bridge.
The osseointegration process could also vary in each patient. The causes could be many, including genetics, bad habits such as smoking or the lack of hygiene, etc.
